pic pic One of the advantages and pleasures of running this web site is that I get to deal with many of the artists directly. Since I'm a guitarist myself, it's like working with two or three hundred peers (although many of them are so talented I would hesitate to use the word "peer" in a musical sense -- maybe "brethren" would be a better word).

I found it amazing just how many of the guitarists who had been around for a while selling CDs had run into dishonest characters in the music business. Typically, the artist would have gotten involved with some company who had never paid them: either for their services, their CDs, or perhaps owed them royalties from a licensing agreement.

I was impressed by the number of people who thanked me (profusely, in some cases) just for paying them when their CDs sold (we sell CDs on consignment).

Where the artists are concerned, I've made accountability a primary focus from day one. No artist working with Guitar Nine is ever in the dark about how many CDs they've sold, or when to expect payment. I've taken a background in computer software, accounting and business and used it to put the systems in place to make sure that "the best surprise is no surprise."

I really didn't expect (at the time) how much this would be appreciated, or how common it was for artists to still be dealing with other individuals and companies who feel that accountability is something to "be phased in at a later time." Of course, the "later time" never comes.

I sense a huge amount of loyalty among the artists I work with. I know several individuals who have parlayed the confidence they have in the fiscal end of doing business with Guitar Nine into recording and releasing more CDs. Nothing kills initiative faster than not getting paid for all the hard work that goes into releasing and distributing a CD.

Great relationships with the artists make for a great site, make no mistake about it.
